Dry Brushing - Skincare routine for radiant skin

Summer is the time when you can't avoid to reveal more skin! Whether it's dipping into the neon blue ocean or to that infinity pool. Did you know dry brushing boost circulation, sweep away dead skin cells, get your lymphatic system moving which helps your body metabolize and get rid of toxins that may cause inflammation and illness, improve the appearance of cellulite, unclogs pores, improve digestion and leaving you with smoother softer skin?

This simple routine is easy to adopt and invigorates your skin.

It is recommended to dry brush in the morning because it is energizing or you may add body oil and brush before you bathe. Either is fine as long as it suits your schedule. Some recommend dry brushing twice a day for optimal results.

It is okay to continue during pregnancy and post pregnancy.

Make sure your skin is dry, hence "dry brushing"

Pick up your brush, start at your feet, all the way at the bottom, and brush upward towards the heart. For your arm, begin at the hands and work upward. Always start from area further away to closer to the center of your body. Don't forget your armpits and inner thighs, that's where the prime lymphatic drainage spots are. If you have the bad habit of crossing your legs while you sit, spend another minute brushing your knee.

Use firm gentle, small strokes upwards, or work in a circular motion. Repeat 2 to 10 times in each section of skin depending how much time you have, overlapping as you go. For the stomach area, work in a counterclockwise pattern. Just go with the flow. Remember to brush your body front and back but avoid the face. Moisturize your skin with body lotion afterwards.

Skin may be slightly pink afterwards that's okay. It should never be red or sting though! Be extra gentle when you brush over sensitive areas like breasts, inner thighs, armpits.

Select a brush with natural, not synthetic, bristles.

Aromatherapy Associates Dry Brush - small size fits perfectly to your palm for easy control. For starters, you need that easy grip to control the strokes movement and gentleness of the moves. Once you get the hang of it, you may get a dry brush with long handle such as the one from Anthropologie for area that are harder to reach such as the lower back.

Towel - believe it or not, skin will fall out hence you hence you might want to stand inside a bath tube or you might want to place a towel on the floor.

Other tips

2. If you brush before heading into the shower, try alternate between hot water and cool water for that extra boost of blood circulation.

3. Apply moisturizing lotion over your entire body afterwards

4. Drink a large glass of warm lemon water to jumpstart your digestive system.

5. Clean your brush weekly with warm soapy water, place at airy location to dry in order to avoid any mildew accumulation.
